Photographic interactive atlas of human body
Photographic interactive atlas of human body (only Atlas) is an interactive educational application above all designed for School of Medicine's learners and doctors during their anatomy studies. Whole atlas was designed as a public web application.
About project
The Topographic Anatomy is an essential part of the education in anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at large and it is the basic for the consequent study of the Clinical Anatomy. The demonstration of the particular regions of the human body is restricted by the size of the area and persistence of the specimens. Taking a picture is one of the used methods that enable display the regions by the proper view of hardly visible regions.
In 2007 the medical students have offered the project of electronic anatomical atlas. Then, they have decided to sign for the SVOČ program (Students research work) and they have started to realize the project being led by the supervisors. The first part of the work – "Abdomen and Pelvis" has been presented at the conference SVOČ 2008, Mefanet 2008 and 44th International Congress on Anatomy – Morphology 2008. This partial work has proved the "viability" and the students´ interest and enthusiasm in functioning of the project. The results are available on the web sites of the Anatomy Department, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Palacký University in Olomouc.
The aim of the project is to improve the quality and amount of available study material for medical students a well as for non-medical students. Moreover, it should help to facilitate their training for the exams (Anatomy, Somatology etc.). The next aim is to enlarge the amount of the digitalize study material mainly for the repetition for advanced students and for medical doctors as revising material of Topographical Anatomy utilized in Clinical Anatomy.
At the present the authors has been working on the 2nd part of the Atlas – "Chest and Limbs". The project is supported by the FRVŠ grant nbr. 1135/2009. Due to the huge amount of partial work, the authors’ team was enlarged and the staff of Anatomy Department participates on the realization of the project. The cadavers that have been received at the Anatomy Department from donors as a study material are subsequently dissected and evidenced by the camera. The best pictures of evidence are inserted into the functional interactive program and completed with the commentary. The final material configuration is available for the internet browsers: Internet Explorer, Mozzila Firefox, Opera etc.. For full functioning is recommended: IE - version 5 and above, MF – version 2 and above, graphic resolution 1152×864 eventually 1024×728.
Interactive Anatomical Atlas is available for all persons concerned i.e. for the students as well as for the public.
